About the Podcast
Who Cares if You Listen? is a round table of musicians talking about topics in and around the world of art music.
What is ‘art music’?
Art Music is that music which one must pay attention to in order to reap its rewards. (I borrowed this definition from JOHN STEINMETZ) This differentiates it from music whose purpose is to sell products or sell/enhance/define the image of a personality (the primary role of popular music).
In western culture we are too comfortable with being spoon fed types of entertainment which require little or no participation from the audience. While we at Who Cares if You Listen? definitely enjoy this style of entertainment, we also like entertainment designed to stimulate the audience’s involvement and encourage thought.
We want to talk about the music and musical artists who are creating music that strives to achieve these goals.
(Nearly) Every week we discuss the music news, interview a musician, and review a recording.
If you were curious; the title of our podcast is from a Milton Babbitt article in High Fidelity from 1958…I can’t say I agree with his ideas in the article (as it doesn’t exactly encourage the audience’s involvement), but it certainly did stimulate thought/debate!
Who Cares if You Listen is a production of VSA Entertainment.
